Welcome to the web pages of the Department of Geological Sciences at MU. We have a dynamic group of faculty and students, who together are making significant contributions to geoscience research. The areas of research covered by our faculty are broad and diverse, however, our research expertise is strongest in the general areas of geophysics and tectonics, petrology and geochemistry, paleobiology and paleoclimate. These strengths allow us to focus on problems identified by the National Research Council to be socially relevant and to be fundamental to an understanding of earth processes. Our faculty enjoy national and international recognition for research, supported by excellent analytical facilities in the department and elsewhere on campus.
Our department also has a tradition of excellence in teaching, in the laboratory and in the field, as well as in the classroom. Faculty mentor students in conducting research problems at both the undergraduate and graduate level, leading to many student-authored publications and student research presentations at conferences every year. Our award-winning field camp is widely recognized as one of the best in the country, and our geology majors will typically take two or three classes that include field trips to Missouri, Texas, Colorado, etc before going to camp. Our study abroad class to Chile (2014) was a great success and the next will be to Spain in 2016.
Our graduate program prepares students for a wide range of professions within the geological sciences. Our students have a strong track record of placement in private, federal, state, and academic institutions. If you need more information than what is available on these pages, you are encouraged to contact myself or any other faculty member directly.
