We
offer these Web pages as an introduction to the Department of Geological
Sciences at MU. As you review the ensuing pages you will see that we
have a dynamic faculty who, along with their students, are making significant
contributions to numerous areas of basic and applied research. This
research is supported by excellent, state-of-the-art analytical facilities
in the department and on campus.
The areas of research covered
by our faculty are broad and diverse, however, our research expertise
is strongest in the general areas of geochemistry
and tectonics. These strengths allow us to focus on problems identified
by the National Research Council to be socially relevant and to be fundamental
to an understanding of earth processes.
Our faculty enjoy national and
international recognition. They are successful in obtaining external
research funds, they serve on editorial boards of leading scientific
journals and on professional panels, they hold elected office in professional
organizations, and they are team members in multidisciplinary research
investigations.
Our department has a heritage
of excellence in teaching, both in the classroom and in the time-honored
tradition of professor and student working together on research problems.
Students also have the opportunity to participate in the department's
teaching mission with award-winning professors.
Our graduate program prepares
students for a wide range of professions within the geological sciences.
Our students have been placed in private, federal, state, and academic
institutions. If you desire more information than what is available
on these pages, you are encouraged to contact any faculty member directly.
