Geology as a Profession
Geology is at the center of the challenges we face in the 21st century, ranging from climate change to natural resources and hazards. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 11% increase of demand on geosciences professionals by 2026. Most of our majors are employed in energy (oil and gas, mineral exploration) or environmental industry, or with state government (e.g., Department of Natural Resources, Department of Transportation). Others go on to top graduate schools around the US.

Undergraduate Scholarships
Alumni are very loyal to our department and have set up a number of endowments that we use to provide scholarships to our talented undergraduate majors. Scholarships for current declared majors range from $2000 to $4000 per year and are renewable based on maintaining a GPA of at least 3.0 at MU.
We also offer scholarships to incoming freshmen who major in the Geological Sciences. The amount of the awards varies, dependent on GPA, class rank and ACT/SAT scores. To be eligible to receive a scholarship, students must formally declare Geological Sciences as a major and enroll in geological sciences courses each semester.
Comprehensive Education
Our department is big enough to be comprehensive but small enough to be friendly, with about 45 majors, 30 grad students and 12 faculty. The MU Geology Club organizes regular outreach events, like the annual Youth night (attended by 200-300 kids), as well as caving trips and social activities.
